Gardiners playing career started with Torquay Utd in 1992 when he made seven appearances for them before leaving to join Shrewsbury Town a year later. He then dropped into non-league football with local sides such as Halesowen and Stourbridge before joining up with Hereford Utd in 2000.

After going into management with Redditch and Bromsgrove he eventually joined Worcester City in 2010 as assistant to their manager Carl Heeley.

The former Worcester City assistant manager Matt Gardiner then became Kidderminster Head Coach in May 2016 following the appointment of John Eustace as Manager a few weeks earlier in April.

After John Eustace moved on to Queens Park Rangers in June 2018 Matt joined up with him a week later.
