Wolverhampton-born Mr Jones was brought up in Castlecroft and went to Northicote School, Bushbury. The father of two lived in Bridgnorth Road, Wightwick with wife Andrea and children Oliver and Charlotte.

Mr Jones joined Lucas Aerospace, now Goodrich Systems in Stafford Road, Fordhouses, at the age of 16. He spent his entire working life at the factory where he became a specialist engineer.

The 6ft 4ins tall centre half enjoyed a glittering soccer career, first playing for Telford before moving to Bilston, Stourbridge and then Kidderminster where he made over 100 first team appearance between 1983 and 1987.

He played in most of the games that took the team to the 1987 FA Trophy final at Wembley against Burton Albion which they eventually won after a replay at The Hawthorns where he appeared in the squad as a substitute in the replay.
