Alan was from a footballing family that included father John who had played for Colchester United as well as Northampton Town, and brother Mick who had played for both Rushden Town and Irthlingborough Diamonds.

He played in the youth set-up at Birmingham City and played for the reserve side in the Football Combination, before he joined Rovers at the start of the 1982/83 Southern league Midland season.

Initially at full-back he made his debut against Aylesbury United on 21 August 1982. By the end of that campaign he had established himself in a long lasting at centre-half partnership with Maurice O Connell.

He was a key part of the side which won promotion from the Southern League Midlands Division and captured the Southern League Cup in the 1985/86 season.

He almost joined Kidderminster Harriers at the start of the 1986/87 campaign, but had a last minute change of heart. During that season he appeared in the first round of the F.A. Cup against Newport County

He was picked in a England non-league squad in February 1988.

He left the Rovers at the end of the 1987/88 season, joining Burton Albion after Bobby Hope announced he was leaving Rovers for the Brewers.

He later moved onto Stafford Rangers, before signing for Kidderminster Harriers in August 1990, before returning for another spell with Burton Albion.

At the start of the 1993/94 season he moved to Rushden & Diamonds, where his of appearances was limited by injury, and he was released at the end of that season.

He continued his career at a lower level, and played for Solihull Borough and Moor Green. In 2001, he was playing for Midland Football Alliance side Oldbury United where he finished his career.
