A central defender. John began his career at Worcester City in 1965. He was signed by Gil Merrick at the start of the 1968-69 season. He was then a fixture in the side for the next 8 seasons.
He was granted a testimonal match against an All Stars XI in October 1974.
His Rovers career was brought to an abrupt end when he broke his leg in a match against A.P. Leamington on 25 October 1975.
