Boldmere St. Michaels Reserves vs. Bromsgrove Sporting

On Tuesday evening Bromsgrove Sporting played their last pre season game before the league kicks off on Saturday with an away game at Young Warriors (3pm), they travelled to Church Road to play the reserve side of Boldmere St. Michaels.

As early as the second minute Sporting showed that they intended to take the game to Boldmere, when Zac Blood found himself free in the penalty area and had his shot well saved by the goalkeeper and the ball fell again to Blood who again got his shot away which was brilliantly saved again. Michael Woolman was also making an impression, but his shot in the sixth minute lacked any power.

On ten minutes Boldmere took the lead when the ball was played down the right, Neil Cooksey slipped in attempting to cut the ball out, and the ball was crossed in for the Boldmere forward to strike at goal, the ball being deflected off Richard Griffiths, to give Paul Maynard in the Sporting goal no chance. Cooksey took a knock five minutes later and was eventually replaced by Danny Patrick.

Woolman got through on 24 minutes, after a defensive lapse from Chris Bright’s through ball, again the ‘keeper made a good save. At this point Sporting seemed to be a little detached from each other, with the midfield not linking up with the forwards. Towards the end of the first half it was all action, firstly the menacing Woolman got in a shot that was deflected for a corner, which was well caught under pressure from the goalkeeper, who immediately launched a huge kick downfield, which was missed by Sander Milicev and the Boldmere centre-forward finished with aplomb. Just before the interval Woolman got in a tangle with Boldmere’s centre-half who inexplicitly stamped on the back of Sporting’s No.9, the referee had no option but to brandish a red card.

Half time – Boldmere St. Michaels 2 Bromsgrove Sporting 0

The second half started with both teams fielding 11 players after an agreement between both managers and the officials, well done to Myles Day for this “sporting” gesture. Again Woolman was prominent at the start of the second half, getting a header on target which brought another good save from the ‘keeper. After 49 minutes James Johnson replaced Milicev. Again Woolman was causing problems and from yet another corner, he got in a header that hit the bar and went over for a goal-kick. On 53 minutes Jason Blockley came on for Blood, and five minutes later Dan Wilkes came on for Nick Allen. Sporting almost got back into the game immediately when after a fine passing move a Woolman shot was blocked by the goalkeeper.

Two minutes later Sporting did pull a goal back when a free kick was played short to Aaron Roberts, who hit a stunning 35 yard shot into the top left hand corner. In the 65th. minute Griffiths became Sporting’s first ever booking, when he made a crude challenge on the Boldmere forward near the halfway line. The four minutes later Boldmere got further in front, a free kick near the corner flag was flicked on where a “Mikes” defender was unmarked at the far post and easily scored. Immediately Gareth Wilkes came on for Bright, and Shaun Maynard came on for Woolman two minutes later. Sporting now seemed more balanced in their set-up and with a quarter of an hour left D. Wilkes reduced the arrears with a lovely piece of skill when he chipped the advancing goalkeeper from just inside the penalty area.

With five minutes left Boldmere should have wrapped up the game, but for a fantastic double block from ‘keeper P. Maynard. For the last minutes of the game it was all Sporting with D. Wilkes and S. Maynard going close before the final shot by G. Wilkes went well wide.
