PENALTY PRIZE FOR WESTFIELDS

Westfields overcame a tricky home tie in the FA Carlsberg Vase 1st Round on Saturday when visiting Bromsgrove Sporting proved difficult opponents on and off the pitch but Westfields secured a 2nd Round place thanks to a decisive 89th minute penalty by Craig Jones.

Bromsgrove Sporting, who have risen from the ashes of Bromsgrove Rovers, brought a huge following of vocal fans who swelled the home attendance to 204 and brought a real Cup tie atmosphere to this FA Vase Cup tie.

In fact the 160 visiting fans were soon in full voice when in only the 2nd minute Matt Gwynne in the Westfields goal was penalised for bringing down Will Tibbetts and from the resultant penalty Sam Wilkinson blasted home the ball past Matt Gwynne to give the visitors a dream start. Westfields began to get into their stride and Jake Bedford in the Bromsgrove goal saved brilliantly from Jamie Insall and Jamie Cuss as the home side hit back.

Then in the 15th minute Westfields drew level when Jamie Insall got his 3rd goal in 3 games from the penalty spot after a Bromsgrove defender had handled a Westfields shot.

Both sides had their opportunities to take the lead before the break but twice Scott Jackson got in vital tackles to thwart Bromsgrove and Insall had a snap shot saved by Bedford in the visitors' goal as the sides played in torrential rain. After the break Westfields took the lead for the first time when Bedford in the visitors' goal palmed a Brad Birch shot and in the goalmouth scramble Jamie Cuss slammed the ball home to put Westfields 2-1 ahead.

In a "ding dong" Cup tie Westfields lost Jamie Insall with an eye injury then Bromsgrove drew level following a corner when referee Mr M Tudor of Gloucester awarded a penalty for "shirt pulling" and Sam Wilkinson hammered home the penalty to put Bromsgrove level at 2-2.

Both sides then went for the winner and Gwynne saved well at the foot of the post then Bromsgrove missed a great chance when Wilkinson headed over the Westfields cross-bar from 6 yards.

Westfields then snatched a dramatic 89th minute winner just as the game was heading for extra time when a deep cross by Alex O

Leary was challenged for by Brad Birch and a Bromsgrove defender, and Referee Tudor awarded his 4th penalty of the game and Westfields' midfield man Craig Jones capped a fine game by scoring from the spot to put Westfields through to the 2nd Round over a very hard working Bromsgrove Sporting side.
