Match Report | Programme
One of the beauties (or shortcomings if you prefer) of the game of football is that the outcome after 90 minutes sweat, toil and tears can hang on just one incident. That proved to be the case with last Saturday's match.

Admittedly Sporting were one down at the time on the 62nd minute but were not playing that badly and an equaliser looked to be on the cards when an horrendous back pass was intercepted by Lichfield star Kyle Minto who sprinted up the pitch with the Sporting defence yards behind. Having got into a scoring position Craig Jones finally caught up with him only to hook the striker's legs from underneath him in the penalty area. Referee Mr Maskery pointed to the spot and Jones received a red card as the last man. Up stepped Liam Holt for the kick but Sporting keeper Jake Bedford guessed correctly and diving to his right kept the ball out of his net.

With ten men against eleven it was asking a lot but with a fair wind achievable for the Rouslers but moments after one penalty, Lichfield had another awarded when Matt Poyner clumsily knocked over Ollie Budd. This time Liam Holt made no mistake and gave his team a two-goal advantage.

Anyway from the start, Lichfield playing down hill were much brighter with half a dozen reasonable chances in the first quarter hour. Sporting were however denied the best effort when Mark Bellingham hit the post after Lichfield keeper Liam Hogen had parried Matt Poyner's shot.

The home side finally took the lead on the 25th minute when Kyle Minto evaded the Sporting back four to put in a precision cross to Ben Minshull who chipped over the advancing Jake Bedford for a well-taken goal.

From then on Sporting got their act together and started to move the ball around well and get it up front. Rico Taylor in particular being quite impressive during this spell.

However that all came to pieces in the second half with the two penalty incidents effectively deciding their fate. Lichfield scored a third on 70 minutes when substitute Dan Rock found himself unmarked after a receiving a good cross from Dan Worrall and fired home with his first touch of the ball.

With a good cushion Lichfield defended in numbers making it virtually impossible for Sporting to find a way through particularly with a man short. However they did hit the woodwork a couple of times and Bellingham made the scoreline a bit more respectable with an easy tap in two minutes into added time.

So at the fourth attempt, Sporting again fail to get a result at Brownsfield Park. After the match coach Les Palmer said, "We had our moments and should have take our chances. We hit the post three times but luck was not on our side and we gave goals away that we should have defended".
