Match Report
After a long run of success stretching back to the end of last year, it was inevitable that Sporting would come down to earth with a bump and that was exactly what happened on Tuesday evening when they were dumped out of the County Urn by near rivals Lye Town.

The Black Country outfit were the quicker starters and gave notice that they were looking for revenge after losing to their hosts in the FA Vase back in September.

Sporting 'keeper Jake Bedford saw more action in the first 10 minutes than the whole of recent matches and was called to save well against Simon Williams and Ben Wilkins twice.

Lye eventually made their superiority count when on 20 minutes Steve Weaver was fouled in the box by Craig Jones. Damien Whitcombe sent Bedford the wrong way to give the visitors the lead.

Sporting knew they had to ramp up their game an attempted to get the ball up front to Mark Bellingham and Billy Russell quickly but the opposition back four remained well-organised and mopped up any threats especially from high balls. A couple more chances went begging for Lye before the interval whilst the home side's best efforts came from Russell and Sean Williams but they went wide.

Playing down hill Lye pushed forward to increase their lead and forced Sporting to concede a couple of free kicks in dangerous positions. From the second Ben Wilkins floated a 30 yard ball into the box that Whitcombe headed home unmarked for the visitors second on 60 minutes.

The home side rallied but their opponents knew they just had to defend their lead and put an extra man into the defence. To be fair both Russell and Bellingham had good chances that were well-saved by Lye keeper Same Pearson and Russell again failed narrowly on 78 minutes to toe-poke home Bellingham's cross.

With full-time looming, Lye managed just one more attack and that resulted in their third when substitute Scott Gennard's cross was blasted in by Kalum Evitts.

So for the second time in just over three weeks Sporting go of a cup competition at the semi-final stage. They did not play that badly but they were up against a useful side and should have gained from the experience.
