A useful work out for both teams saw Alvechurch slightly shaded their neighbours from Bromsgrove with a single goal in the first half writes Phil Baker.
Before the kick-off the vice-chairman of Bromsgrove Council, Caroline Spencer presented each captain with a certificate congratulating each team on their success last season.
Then for much of the first half the two teams pretty much cancelled each other out with neither really having any clear-cut chances as both back-lines dealt efficiently with any threats. Jason Cowley put a good effort over the bar on 37 minutes but it was the home side who took the lead with a couple of minutes of the half remaining when Dan Dubidat managed to slide the ball home under Reece Francis after getting on the end of a good long range pass into the box.
With the temperature dropping slightly, the tempo quickened in the second half as Sporting were finding out what it will be like to play teams at a higher level with a faster pace and quicker and harder tackles. Dubidat skied a useful chance on the 50th minute then a couple of minutes later he was bought down just outside the box but referee Mr Walker waved play on, fortunately for Sporting who could have been a man less on the pitch.
Reece Francis prevented ‘Church from extending their lead with a couple of well-timed catches whilst at the other end Sam Wills went close with a free-kick and Chrisi Conway might have done better than to scuff his shot from a good position.
So a reasonable evening’s entertainment for the large crowd who saw a couple of useful teams play but will now be waiting for things to start for real in a couple of weeks time.
