Pre-Season Friendly – Saturday 14th August 2010 – 3 pm Kick Off
Bromsgrove Sporting (0 ) 0 v Romulus (0) 2

Bromsgrove Sporting created another historic step on their road to providing a football club for the town, following Rovers demise, by kicking off their very first home game against Evo-Stick league opponents Romulus from Sutton Coldfield. Since their creation in 1979, Romulus have trod the road Sporting are just setting out on as they have progressed through the Midland Combination and the Alliance into Step 5 of non-league football. In a little under 10 years they rose through the Midland Combination to the Southern and now the Evo Stick Leagues to a place 4 steps above Sporting in the pyramid. The game was Romulus last pre-season friendly before their league kicks off next Saturday.
Unfortunately, the weather has no respect for history and the game was played through a torrential downpour which eased only for sun shine early in the second half before continuing until the end of the game. In truth, Romulus had the better of the first half and could have gone ahead as early as the fourth minute as Sporting keeper, Baker, made a great save with his legs as Romulus striker Tyrone Fagan hit a good shot.
Half-time came scoreless and with little attacking threat from Sporting but after 49 minutes a cross from Warman just eluded the on-rushing Wilkes and went for a goal-kick. It was Romulus who went ahead in the 65th minute as the rain played its part. A shot from Fagan looked to be heading comfortably into Baker’s arms but the wet ball took on the texture of a bar of soap and the keeper let it through his hands, between his legs and into the net.
Sporting tried hard to get back into contention but were undone again on 82 minutes as a cross from Nathaniel Caines was missed by defenders and was turned into the net for 2 – 0. There was still time for keeper Baker to make a great save at the feet of a Romulus forward on 89 minutes but in doing so he injured himself and had to be replaced in goal.
A lot of endeavour from Sporting but in the end the class of Romulus showed and the game ended as a defeat. Sporting have their final pre-season friendly away to Boldmere Reserves on Tuesday evening.
