A wonder strike from Charlie Dowd in the final moments ensured Bromsgrove Sporting came away from Thame with a 1-1 draw.
It appeared as though the home team would bag all three points, as Harry Scott's 79th minute free kick was converted at the back post by Jamie Essex, but Dowd's spectacular dipping effort from just outside the area guaranteed Sporting fans were leaving Oxfordshire with something to cheer.
The first half was one of very few chances, with John Pykett having the Rouslers' best opportunities of opening the deadlock, with two chances in quick succession.
These came 15 minutes in, the first being a shot from close range blocked away, the second a shot from the fringe of the box that was aimed hard and low towards the goal of Craig Hill, who matched it with a firm left palm, diverting it for a corner.
Meanwhile, Thame's best chance of the opening 45 came courtesy of the lively Scott, who's shot from an acute angle out wide zipped across the wet turf and went narrowly wide of Dan Crane's goal.
The second was a similarly even affair, with both teams threatening the goal with big opportunities before their eventual goals. Two golden chances came for Dowd on 56 minutes, but some top quality keeping from Hill kept the scores level.
The first was a well struck drive that was acrobatically saved low down, the other being a header from six yards out that was met with a leap from an inspired Hill, who managed to claw the ball to safety.
The 65th minute saw Scott have another chance, as his free kick was whipped tantalisingly across the goal, somehow managing to evade everybody and narrowly skid out for a goal kick.
The opener would come from a similar scenario - a Scott free kick, albeit from a little further forward than the aforementioned one, crossed invitingly into the area, falling to the feet of Essex, who had the simplest of tap ins from no more than a few yards from goal.
Just as though it seemed as though Sporting's unbeaten run in all competitions of four games would be coming to an end, up stepped Dowd in the 90th minute. Set up by Richard Gregory, it was Saturday's standout player vs Aylesbury who produced goods again, with a sweetly struck shot that dipped just under Hill.
That proved to be the final meaningful highlight of the match, with a draw a fair result against a smart Thame outfit. |
