REACTION: McDONALD FULL OF PRAISE FOLLOWING THRILLING WIN

30 September 2020
THE PICS left it late to decide an epic battle with Bromsgrove Sporting on Tuesday evening as Riccardo Calder’s last-gasp goal gave us a thrilling 4-3 win to maintain our unbeaten start to the season.

“What an advert for non-League football that was,” purred manager, Liam McDonald. “We were on the right side of it, which was great, but it was a game that could have easily gone either way.

“We started well and were dominant in what we did; we stuck to our game plan and deservedly took a two-goal lead.
“An unfortunate own goal gave them a lifeline and then in the second half it was end-to-end from two teams who wanted to attack.

“We then found ourselves 3-2 down, which was hard on us, but our togetherness and never-say-die attitude really came to the fore and got us back in it, culminating with the last minute winner.

“It was a fantastic game to watch, not so much for me or Bren [Kelly, Bromsgrove manager], but we’re having that bit of luck at the moment and scoring a lot of late goals, which is a credit to my players for keeping going right until the death.

“Credit to Bromsgrove for their part; they are a good side with a good manager and it was a high tempo contest. Yes, there were mistakes from both teams, which need to be addressed, but I am just happy we were able to snatch the three points.

“The atmosphere was fantastic; we’re getting a lot of new fans coming along to watch us at the moment and I’d like to think that we are entertaining them. There’s a good feeling around the club and it was nice to see that our performance put smiles on faces in these difficult times.

“We’re learning all of the time and I’ve got a group here that want to learn and improve. Their attitude is spot-on; it’s been a tough schedule for us over recent weeks and we’re down to the bare bones but it’s a squad game and it is really encouraging to see some of the younger lads stepping up to the plate.

“Our substitutes had a big impact on Tuesday, which was pleasing to see, and it all bodes well for the battles ahead.”
