Midland Combination President's Cup Round Two

Bromsgrove Sporting 1 Fairfield Villa 3 (After Extra Time, 0-0 at 90 minutes)

Fairfield Villa claimed local bragging rights after a comprehensive victory against Bromsgrove Sporting last Tuesday evening in the second round of the Midland Combination President's Cup.

Scores were level after ninety minutes though to be fair Villa should have had the match wrapped up by then. Countless chances went begging for them including one shot from Ryan Sproston that thundered against the post in the 83rd minute.

The visitors finally and deservedly took the lead in the first minute of extra time when Scott Gaffney put away a simple chance from a few yards out.

This became something of a wake up call to Sporting who for the next 15 minutes played somewhat better than previously in the match and even managed to grab an equaliser through Jon Rogers just after the extra time interval.

However Bromsgrove legs began to tire more than Fairfield's and with 113 minutes on the clock, Steve McGlen picked the ball up just inside the penalty and fired wide of Sporting 'keeper Grant Biddle, to restore Fairfield's lead.

Lewis Smith then put the match beyond the home team reach two minutes later when he got in front the Sporting defence and put home a neat shot from a narrow angle.

So victory to Fairfield in the first competitive match between these two sides that even brought a smile to Paul Oakes' face. Meanwhile Stewart Brighton has some planning to do to get his team motivated and organised for a tough looking match on Saturday against Stretton Eagles.
