Match Report | Programme
Bromsgrove Sporting won a tough cup tie against an ill disciplined Shirley Town side with a goal in each half from Keith Draper. In a hotly contested first half Shirley had the first clear opportunity to score on 11 minutes as Sporting keeper Chris Mole pulled off a great save as Shirley winger Leon Reid beat the offside trap and advanced on goal.

Five minutes later and it was Sporting who went ahead as a great pass from Joe Brookes released Draper in the inside right channel. The winger cut into the area as three defenders tried to recover and just managed to hit a shot that took a deflection past the unfortunate Sanders in the Shirley goal.

The action continued at both ends with Shirley having the advantage territorially but being unable to penetrate Sporting's defence except for a minute after Sporting's goal when Mole again saved from a one on one as Baxter caught out Harris at left back. Shirley did put the ball into the Sporting net but this was disallowed for a clear offside.

The only unfortunate aspect of the first half was an injury to Sporting's Chris Bright which is suspected to be a broken collar bone sustained in a tackle from Farrell as he took a poor touch was trying to retain possession of the lost ball.

The second half was better for Sporting and they should have wrapped up the game before they did as a couple of great saves from Sanders and some wasteful finishing kept the score at 1-0. Winger Ryan Molesworth, on for Bright, hit the bar and had a shot cleared off the line.

Pete Jenvey also put a shot the wrong side of the post under pressure from the defence as the pressure mounted. With Jon Rogers playing a pivotal role holding up the ball as the lone striker Shirley defenders were fortunate to hold out until the 85th minute. Crucially as Sporting worked the ball in from the right wing it was scrambled out but Draper hit a goal from the edge of the box via the underside of the bar.

With Shirley already having collected four bookings for various offences the second goal signalled an almost complete loss of discipline and four more bookings, including a second for Farrell and a red card for one of their management team saw the game descend into farce for the last few minutes but Sporting held their discipline and shape to register a good victory.
