| The clubs formation is a little uncertain although continued research shows that in November1908 Walsall Wood played Shropshire Light Infantry in the Birmingham Junior Cup
It is likely that the present club was an amalgamation of several teams operating in and around Walsall Wood.
Walsall Wood was especially prominent throughout the 1920s and 30s and then again when football re commenced after World War two
The club was one of the strongest sides in the West Midlands outside the Football League, such was the strength that it featured in cigarette cards alongside the likes of Aston Villa, West Bomwich Albion, Wolves, Birmingham and Walsall
Cup competitions have long been the forte winning many of the major non-league competitions of the day.
The Walsall Senior Cup was won in 1923 and the club went on to secure the trophy nine occasions between 1932 and 1962
In league competitions the most successful period came when the club entered The Worcester Combination , later to become The Midland Combination 1951/52
Walsall Wood were league champions in their first season and runners up five times during the decade that followed.
Three years ago a new committee was formed as the clubs future was in doubt as many bills had not been paid by the former committee.
A lot of hard work was put in at the club to raise money and now after three years all have been paid off.
In recent seasons, has seen Walsall Wood retuns to the Midland Combination Premier Division. In the 2010 /11 season, has also seen a new Football Management team, with Nigel Birch being appointed as 1st Team Manager. In addition to the 1st team, the club also run a reserve, youth and a number fo junior teams.
Proud of its roots, the club continue to provide opportunities for local people to play for this established non league team.
The club are now a limited company, & are also to become a registered charity so Walsall Woods future looks bright.
In July 2011, Roger & Janet Merrick resigned from the Board. Ivor Osborne, much respected in local football circles, has taken over as Chairman. |
