Although Birmingham County Football Association state that Alvis were founded in 1949 they were going more than 20 years before this. Alvis are in fact mentioned in the Midland Daily Telegraph later called Coventry Evening Telegraph, and now called Coventry Telegraph. Alvis were first reported on Saturday 1st September 1928 when they played St. Georges. The match was played at Birmingham Road, Coventry, with the referee being, Mr.W.Pardoe. The Alvis team was: P. Moore, Barnes and Jackson; Robson, Jones and Jackson; Smith, A. Moore, Pakeman, Kirby and Buckingham and the result was St. Georges 6 Alvis 0. On 15th September 1928 the paper stated Alvis made drastic changes in their team which met and defeated Wood End 2-1, thus winning their first Combination match.
In 1930 the Alvis got to the final of the Midland Daily Telegraph Junior Cup which was played at British Queen Road, Bedworth, and the result was a 2.2 draw. The replay was at Angel Ground, Great Heath on Tuesday April 29th. Kick off 6.30 pm. Alvis won 2.1. The attendance was 731 and the receipts were £14. 8s. 2d.
Alvis remained in the Coventry Combination until 1934/35 but there is no mention of Alvis until September 4th 1937 when they played in the Works League Division 11 against Lockheed. Other teams in the league include: Armstrong Siddley, Brico, GEC, Dunlop, Gas, Kingfields, Rover, BTH. On Thursday 7th September 1939 the Midland Daily Telegraph states Football League Competition Cancelled, Central Amateur League, suspended for time being, Bible Class League Cancels Fixtures. The Second World War had put a stop to Alvis, with fixtures only resuming again in September 1942.
From the war years up to 1970, the Alvis played in the Coventry Works Sports Association Football League which then became the Coventry Alliance Football League and then the Coventry Suburban and Football Alliance which lasted until 1989. Like most clubs, various promotions, relegations and cup finals followed.
In 1987 the Alvis Works closed and all the sports teams that were based at Holyhead Road found themselves playing at various venues whilst the new facility was being built. Alvis played at The Butts Stadium, now the home of Coventry Rugby Club, and were called Alvis S.G.L.F.C. The 1990-91 season saw them based at The Sports Connexion, Leamington Road, Ryton on Dunsmore and the following season saw them based at the Alvis Sports & Social Club, Green Lane South. They also returned to the name of Alvis F.C. Between 1989 and 1994 the league was The Coventry Alliance Mitchells & Butlers Football League and was then replaced by The Coventry Alliance Football League by which it is known today.
After a poor season for both the teams in season 1992-93, Alvis first team now began their challenge in the Midland Combination whilst the reserves were in The Coventry Alliance Division Three. Alvis were placed in Midland Combination Division Two and began their new adventure with a home win against Fairfield Villa.. Seasons followed with mixed successes. At the start of the 1997-98 season Darren Boon became joint manager with Arthur Smith, and Alvis had a good season by finishing in third position and gaining promotion to Division One. In 1998-99 Alvis finished fourth and won the Presidents Cup by beating Thimblemill 2-0 in the final.
In 2001, after eight seasons in Midland football, the Alvis resigned from the Midland Combination and returned to the Coventry Alliance in Division Two. It is at this point Don Corrigan took over the helm as Chairman the best decision the club has ever made. The reserves re-joined the Coventry Alliance League in 2005-06 and both sides enjoyed promotions and a cup success. It is in season 2007-08 that the club’s fortunes really picked up with the appointment of Damain Cassidy. His skill putting together successful teams and knowledge of players in the Coventry and Warwickshire is unmatched and the result has been a list of league titles and trophies.
