UTTOXETER TOWN – A SHORT HISTORY

Uttoxeter Town were formed in 1972 when the Bamfords Sports Ground became vacant following the demise of Bamfords Ltd. The facility was taken over by the East Staffs Borough Council and they offered a lease to the newly formed Oldfields Sports & Social Club. Use of the football pitch was offered to Uttoxeter Amateurs who were at that time using a pitch on Uttoxeter Racecourse. They were split between those that wished to remain at the Racecourse and those who wished to move. Those that moved formed Uttoxeter Town FC and moved to Oldfields.

Initially UTFC fielded two Saturday sides in the Staffs County League. However as interest in Saturday football declined, one of the teams moved into the very competitive Uttoxeter Sunday League.
By the end of the 1970’s UTFC had pulled out of Saturday football altogether and concentrated on Sunday football with their only side now competing in the Burton & District Sunday League. After a few years the team were in decline and merged with the Weaver Lodge team from the Uttoxeter and District Sunday League. Initially they were renamed Oldfields Lodge but soon reverted back to the familiar UTFC name.

Uttoxeter Town then enjoyed many years success in the Burton and District Sunday Premier League, winning the Premier League title seven times in addition to many cup successes. In the 2010-2011 season the Town won the Premier League Title and all 3 cups in which they competed. The League’s first ‘quadruple’ in nearly 50 years.
With no opportunities for promotion or advancement in Sunday football the logical step was to revert to Saturday football. Town applied to the Staffs County Senior League and were invited to join Division One. A league and cup double followed and promotion to the Premier League in which the side played last season.

To sustain this progress Town were obliged to establish a reserve team for the 2013/14 season which joined the Staffs County Senior League Division Two.
Last season the first team finished 2nd to Wolstanton in the Staffs County Senior League Premier Division and the reserves finished 2nd to Featherstone in Division Two. Both teams were promoted with the first team playing in the Midland League Division One. The first time a Uttoxeter club has competed at level 6. The reserve team have been promoted to Division One of the SCSL, the League the first team played in 2 years ago.
The Club also has an Under 18 side.
